The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who was drafted in a companie of the Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 46.  This unit was formed in late August 1939 as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 46 and trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 46. This regiment was part of the 30.Infanterie-Division. The division and her units saw its first combat during the invasion of Poland and then, in May 1940 in Belgium and France. After France it participated in the invasion of Russia as of from June 1941. It fought in areas like Ilmensee, Demjansk Staraja Russa and also Kurland.
From 1944 on the bataillon, by then named Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbilungs Bataillon 46, also trained and supplied soldiers for units of the 89.Infanterie-Division which saw combat in Normandie and later in the Netherlands. In September 1944 the bataillon was mobilized and used to form the II.Bataillon Grenadier Regiment 1225 which was part of the 190.Infanterie-Division. It was put into action in the Kleve area and Venlo area.
A new Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 46 was formed in late September 1944 and now also supplied soldiers for the 190.Infanterie-Division and as from 1945 on also for the 61.Infanterie-Division.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
