The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke'' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to Leutnant Walter Taute. Walter served in the 3.Kompanie Armierungs Bataillon 178. He was born in September 1987 so he was 27 when the war broke out in 1914.
An Armierungs Bataillon was a construction unit responsible for building fortifications, pillboxes, trenches, roads, (barbed wire) obstacles etc. etc.
You can imagine that this was an important branch/unit during the trench warfare in WW1 with frontlines hardly moving.
Harder to find tag, especially one with a rank on it.
