The moment the photo was taken Erich was the commander of the III.Bataillon Grenadier Regiment 123
Erich earned the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold in December 1941, the Ritterkreuz in August 1942, the Ehrenblattspange für Heeres und Waffen-ss in August 1942, Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub in May 1943 and the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub und Schwerten in January 1944. Besides these he earned a lot more medals/awards.
