The moment the photo was taken Joachim was the commander of the I.Gruppe Lehrgeschwader 1.
Joachim participated, with his unit, in the invasion of Poland, Netherlands, France and the Battle of Britain. In early 1941 he operated in the skies above Malta, Crete and supporting the Afrikakorps. He earned the Ritterkreuz on the 24th of November 1940, the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub on the 16th of January 1942 and the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub und Schwerten on the 28th of September 1942.
