The document shows overall signs of wear. Folded twice. The Eisernes Kreuz 2.Klasse was awarded on the 27st November 1944 to Alfons who served in the 4 (MG) Kompanie Grenadier Regiment (mot) 8. This regiment was formed from as Infanterie Regiment (mot) 8. It was part of the 3.Infanterie-Division. The regiment was involved in the battle of Stalingrad in Januari 1943. and 6 days later reached the outskirts of the city. The regiment was destroyed. It had lost a total of 510 men during the battles. The regiment was reformed in March 1943 in France and fell again under the 3.Panzergrenadier-Division. In July it moved to Italy where it fought untill July 1944 before it moved to France in August of that year. From October 1944 till early December it fought fiercely in the Battle of Aachen. It was pulled back and was reinforced and prepared for the battle of the Ardennes. It participated from the 20th of December in the campaign. It fought on the 26th in Raum Krinkelt - Elsenborn and after that marched west of Bastogne. After the Ardennes campaign it fought at the Remagen Bridge in March 1945.
