The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the 2.Kompanie Aufklärungs Abteilung 171. This unit was formed in late August 1939 from Kavallerie-Regiment 14. It was part of the 71.Infanterie-Division which saw its first combat during the invasion of Belgium and then France in May 1940. From June 1941 it fought in Russia in areas like Kiew, Charkow, Donbogen and Stalingrad were it was destroyed in early 1943.
Shortly after the division and her unit were rebuild again in Denmark and in the second half of 1943 it was put into action in Italy.
