The moment the photo was taken Richard was Generalleutnant and commander of the 1.Fallschirm-Division. He is checking out the defences of his troops in Southern Italy.
Richard earned the Ritterkreuz on the 14th of June 1941 as commander of Fallschirmjäger Regiment 3. In March 1942 he was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold, the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub in February 1944 and the Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub und Schwerten in March 1944.
The size of the photograph is 13cm*18cm. Dated 27.11.1943.
