Death notice card and photos of Karl (Otto Heinrich) Smekens who was killed in action during fighting in the Kiev area.
All pieces show overall normal signs of storage wear. Karl was a Gefreiter in the 2.Kompanie Panzer Jäger Abteilung 87. This abteilung was part of the 25.Panzer-Division. The abteilung was formed in March 1943 in Norway. After some training in Norway it moved to France to complete its training. After that it was transported to the eastern front.
This unit was equipped with French captured tanks such as the Renault R-35, SOMUA S-35, Hotchkiss H-39 and the Renault Char B-1. Later they were also equipped with the Panzer IV and the Tiger.
Karl died on the 8th of November 1943. The notice comes with 2 photographs of Karl leaning out of his Somua S-35 tank.
