The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served within the 8 Batterie Artillerie Regiment 23. It was formed in October 1935. It fell under the 23.Infanterie-Division. It was put into action during the invasion of Poland and after that in France.
In September 1942 the regiment was renamed into Panzer Artillerie Regiment 23 as part of the 26.Panzer-Division. This division saw combat in Italy until the end of the war.
A new Artillerie Regiment 23 was formed in Denmark in October 1942.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldiers bloodtype.

This tag is published in the book 'Deutsche Erkennungsmarken' by Jean Höidal (page 90).
