The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served within the 4.Kompanie Brücken Bau Bataillon 683. This unit was formed in late August 1939 and participated in the invasion of the low countries in May 1940. It fell under the command of the Kommandant der Rheinübergänge. In June 1941 it participated in the invasion of (North) Russia and in 1942 it was part of the 18.Armee and in the summer of 1943 it was renamed into Pionier Brücken Bataillon 683.
In late 1944/early 1945 it became part of the 2.Armee.
