Very nice and rare early produced Kampfgeschader 51 related tag in used, but very good condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the I.Gruppe 1.Staffel Kampfgeschwader 51 'Edelweiss'. This unit was formed in May 1939 in Landsberg from the I.Gruppe Kampfgeschwader 225. As a matter of fact when you look at the tag you see that there is a cross through the '25' telling us that the soldier first served in Kampfgeschwader 225.
The I.Gruppe Kampfgeschwader 51 flew the Junkers 88 bomber. It operated during the invasion of France and then the Battle of Britain. In early 1941 it operated during the Balkan Feldzug and later operated in Russia. The I.Gruppe was then transported back to th west and got the task to (revenge) bomb London.
In th summer of 1944 the I.Gruppe changed airplanes from the Me410 to the Me262 jet plane! It say action during the Battle of the Bugle in the winter of 1944.
Hard to find tag!
