The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 20 was formed in August of 1939 in Regensburg. It trained and delivered soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 20. The regiment was part of the 10.Infanterie-Division. In October 1942 the bataillon became motorized and was renamed into Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon (mot)20. In June 1944 the ersatz bataillon was used to for Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon (mot.)20 and in December 1944 it became Panzergrenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon (mot.)20. The bataillon was mobilied in March 1945.
A Stammkompanie was a unit that trained the soldiers. Often the soldiers of this companie were soldiers who had frontline experience, but no longer were fully usable on the front due to injuries. Of course this changed later in the war and they also where put into action as there was a shortage of (front)soldiers.

The 'A' on both parts (and 1 on the back) of the tag stands for the soldiers bloodtype.
