Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the Stamm Kompanie Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 386.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The bataillon was formed in August 1939 in Postdam as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 386. It trained and supplied soldiers for the 218.Infanterie-Division.
In November 1942 the bataillon was renamed into Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 386. It still supplied men for the 218.Infanterie-Division. In Juni 1944 the Ersatz Bataillon was disbanned and the Stammkompanie was used to form Ersatz- und Ausbildungs-Bataillon (m)273.
In November 1944 the bataillon was moved to Danmark. The Ersatz Bataillon became part of the 233.Resere-Panzer-Division.
A Stammkompanie was a unit that trained the soldiers. Often the soldiers of this kompanie were soldiers who had frontline experience, but no longer were fully usable on the front due to injuries. Of course this changed later in the war and they also where put into action as there was a shortage of (front)soldiers.
