The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The bataillon was formed in September 1939 in Bonn as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 306. It trained and supplied soldiers for the 211.Infanterie-Division
In November 1942 the bataillon was renamed into Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 306. It still supplied men for the 211.Infanterie-Division. In March 1943 the Ersatz and Ausbildungs bataillons where merged. In June 1943 the ersatz bataillon moved to Venlo, the Netherlands, and the ausbildungs bataillon moved to Dusseldorf. In March 1945 the bataillon was used to form Ersatz Regiment 211 as part of Heeresgruppe B.
A Stammkompanie was a unit that trained the soldiers. Often the soldiers of this kompanie were soldiers who had frontline experience, but no longer were fully usable on the front due to injuries. Of course this changed later in the war and they also where put into action as there was a shortage of (front)soldiers.
