All the documents show overall normal signs of wear/usage. They belonged to a soldier named Michael Wagner who volunteered and served in Gebirgsjäger Ersatz Bataillon 100. After training Michael served in the Stabskompanie II.Bataillon Gebirgsjäger Regiment 98 which was part of the 1.Gebirgs-Division
With this regiment Michael was put into action in Greece and the Balkans (Croatia and Bosnia) from late June 1943 until mid April 1944. During this time Michael stole 2 times. The first time on the 27.2.1944, when in action in Croatia he had looted a pair of ladies shoes. And the second time on 20.3.1944 he had looted from a civilians house in Croatia 25 pounds of bacon, 20 pounds of ham, 4 pounds of pigs fat and 40 eggs.
For these matters Michael was convicted, by the 1.Gebirgs-Division Criminal Court, to 2 years and 8 months of detention and reduction to the ranks for this looting. He was then detained at the Glatz army prison on the 10.7.1944.
His superior officer described him as: 'Floundering person of inferior character und unreliable''! and he had been punished before by his unit for stealing'.

The grouping consist out 9 different documents. This includes;

  • Wehrpass; the Wehrpass is solid and complete with all pages. The photo of Michael has been removed. The Wehrpass was declared invalid after he was convicted.
  • Soldbuch; shows more signs of wear, but is complete with all pages. A portrait was never added. The Soldbuch was declared invalid after he was convicted.
  • Permission document by his father to join the Army as a volunteer. This was necessary as Michael was only 17 years old.
  • Two statements of non-Jewish descent (1941 amd 1942)
  • 1.Gebirgs-Division Criminal Court verdict, 17.4.1944.
  • Contemporary copy of the sentence, issued at the Glatz army prison were he was detained 10.7.1944.
  • Discharge certificate from Glatz army prison, 5.9.1944. He is sent to the penal unit of the former 1.Gebirgs-Division for rehabilitation by fighting against the enemy. This means that he would get all the dangerous and dirty jobs available; Mine-clearing in the face of the enemy, 'forlorn hope' assault actions etc. etc.
  • Wehrstammbuch: counterpart of the Wehrpass.

What happened to Michael while serving with the penal unit is unclear, but it is a fact that chances of survival with such a unit were minimal, certainly during the last year of the war and a transfer to such a unit was more or less a death sentance!

Very interesting grouping and pretty rare to find.
