The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served within the 9.Kompanie Jäger (Feldausbildungs) Regiment 616. This unit was formed in September 1942 as Infanterie (Feldausbildungs) Regiment 616 in Russia from RAD men. It was part of the 381.Infanterie (Feldausbildungs)-Division.
In October 1942 it was renamed Grenadier (Feldausbilungs) Regiment 616.
In the summer of 1943 the I. and II.Bataillon of the regiment became part of the 97.Jäger-Division. It saw action on the eastern front in the areas like Kuban, Krim, Nikopol and later in Oberschlesien.
