The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier that served in 5.Kompanie II.Abteilung Flieger Ausbildungs Regiment 71. This regiment was formed in April 1939 in Sorau from Flieger Ersatz Abteilung 71. In August 1942 the regiment became Flieger Regiment 71 and the II.Abteilung was stationed in Carcassonne, Southern France. The II.Abteilung was also known as Kampfgruppe Simon, named after it's commander Oberstleutnant Fritz Simon. According to research this group consisted of only 400 soldiers.
It fought fiercely against the Americans in late August and early September 1944 in the Monelimar and Lyon area.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag, stands for the soldier's bloodtype. What makes this tag even more interesting is that the soldier was captured and he carved his POWnr. in the tag on the back.
Interesting dogtag.
