Very nice Staff level tag of (Festungs) Grenadier Regiment 858 in used, but very good condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall signs of wear. It belonged to a member of the Stabskompanie Grenadier Regiment 858. As a matter of fact the correct name is Festungs-Grenadier-Regiment 858. It was formed in October 1942 as Festungs-Infanterie-Regiment 858 and was part of the 346.Infanterie-Division. This division and her units had the task to defend the French coast and where situated between Lorient and St. Nazaire and the moment the Normandy Invasion began it was defending the coast in St.Malo.
Most of the division was destroyed and the remants pulled back via Belgium into the Netherlands where it fought against the Canadians and was pushed back via the Biesbosch to the area of Renkum-Emmerik, near Arnheim. It surrenderred on the 5th of May 1945 in the Soesterberg area.
Very interesting unit.
