The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear of wear. It's broken, but complete. It belonged to a soldier who was drafteds/schooled at the Schule für Brieftaubenwesen or School for (post) carrier pigeons. These pigeons were used for communication purposes to fly important notes (orders) from one place to the other.
Th 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
