Very nice and hard to vind 1.Vermessungs-Batterie related erkennungsmarke in used, but excellent condition.
The tag shows overall normal signs of wear. The abteilung was formed in October 1936 in Fulda as part of the 9.Infanterie-Division. In October 1937 the abteilung was used to form Beobachtungs Abteilung 15.
A new Beobachtungs Abteilung 9 was formed the same month in Mühlhausen. Again part of the 9.Infanterie-Division. It was first put into action during the invasion of Luxembourg and then France as part of the III.Armee-Korps. After France it participated in the invasion of Russia during Operation Barbarossa in June 1941. This time as part of the 9.Armee, but this soon became the 12.Panzer-Division.
The abteilung spent the entire war active on the eastern front supporting different divisions.
The 'O' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
Interesting dog tag with a lot of history of a not often seen unit.
This tag is published in the book 'Deutsche Erkennungsmarken' by Jean Höidal (page 56).
