Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the Marschkompanie Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 397.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The bataillon was formed in August 1939 in Berlin-Ruhleben as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 397. It trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 397 (later renamed Grenadier Regiment 397) which was part of the 218.Infanterie-Division.
The units, as part of this division, saw combat in Cholm, Opotschka, Oesel and Kurland.
