The document is in overall good condition. Shows only some signs of wear. Johannes served in the 9.Kompanie Infanterie Regiment 276. The regiment was formed in September 1939 and fell under the 94.Infanterie-Division. It was moved to the Westwall in October were it trained. The division was put on reserve for the attack on France and marched via Trier through Luxemburg and into France (Sedan). After crossing the Maas river it arrived in Hancourt. Here the regiment covered the flank of the motorized units advancing on to Dunkirk. On the 6th of June the regiment came into action in the Somme area. In July 1941 the division was moved to the east to fight in Russia. It fought in the Battle of Kiew. After that Djnepr, Orel and Kamyschewacha. In the winter of 1941/1942 regiment 276 foughts it way to the city of Stalingrad via Woroschilowgrad. In October 1942 it was renamed Grenadier Regiment 276 and it still fought in the Stalingrad area in house-to-house combat. After the encirclement, it took up positions west of Tynok. Suffering heavy losses, the regiment defended the north-eastern edge of the pocket and was destroyed in the process. The regiment was recreated again with troops of Grenadier Regiment 878, 875 and survivors of the old regiment in the spring of 1943 in west-France. It was moved to Italy to the Piacenza area. It fought the remaining of the war in Italy. The document is signed by General der Artillerie Georg Pfeiffer. Wearer of the Ritterkeuz des Eisernen Kreuzes. With the award document also comes a letter/announcement that Johannes was awarded the Infanterie Sturmabzeichen in Silber on the 10th of August 1942. This document shows a bit more wear. (has a rip on the lower part in the middle).
