The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who was drafted in the Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 4/222. This unit was formed in September 1939 in Wismar as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 222. It trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 222 which was part of the 75.Infanterie-Division. This division was put into action during the invaison of France in Mai 1940 and after France it saw action on the eastern front. It operated in Cholm, Kiev, Belgorod, Sumy, Kursk Brody and Karpaten.
In October 1942 the Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 222 became Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 222. In January 1945 Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 4 and Grenadier Ersatz Batailon 222 were fused to Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 4/222.
