Nice zinc Wehrmacht Pionier related tag in used condition.
The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. It belonged to a soldier who served in the 3.Kompanie Pionier Bataillon 1. This unit goes all the way back to 1920, the Reichswehr period when it was formed and was known a he 1.(Preuß.) Pionier Bataillon. In October 1935 the bataillon was renamed into Pionier Bataillon 1 and was part of the 1.Infanterie-Division. With this division it operated in the invasion of Poland. After that it participated in the invasion of Belgium and France.
From June 1941 onwards it operated on the eastern front and saw combat in the Riga-Narwa-Leningrad area, Wolchow, Ladoga and more.
The carved in 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
