Nice worn dog tag from a soldier who served in the 2.Marschkompanie Grenadier Ersatz Bataillon 61.
The dog tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows signs of wear. The bataillon was formed in August 1939 in München as Infanterie Ersatz Bataillon 61. It trained and supplied soldiers for Infanterie Regiment 61 (later renamed Grenadier Regiment 61) which was part of the 7.Infanterie-Division. With this division the regiment say combat during the invasion of Belgium and France. After that it saw combat on the Russian front in areas like Smolensk, Moskau, Orelbogen, Desna, Narew and West Prussia.
The ersatz bataillon was disbanned in 1944 and the soldiers were absorbed in other units.
