The overall condition of the dogtag is good. Its a well preserved grounddug. The number 256170 tell us the soldier served in the 2.Kompanie Fallschirmjäger Regiment 6. This regiment was formed in early 1943 in France from remnants of Brigade Ramcke. Bataillon 1 and 2 moved to south of Rome (Italy). Bataillon 1 moved to Russia in November 1943 to fight as a ground unit and fought together with the 2.SS-Panzer-Division. After seen heavy fighting for 5 months the bataillon was moved to Cologne in April 1944 before being send to Normandie in May.
On the 7th of May the 1st. Bataillon fought against the famous 82nd and 101st US Airbone at the town of Vierville (noth of Carentan) where it got destroyed. Only 1 Leutnant and 23 soldiers managed to escape.
By early August only 40 men where left of Regiment 6 before it was refreshed again that same month up to 1000 men. It moved to the Tilburg (Holland) area in september 1944 and fought in that area during Operation Market Garden. It stayed in Holland till late November and was then moved to Wesel (Germany). On the 11th of December the regiment was ordered a airdrop which took place in the night of 16/17 December in the Malmedy area. After the Battle of the Bulge it fought in the Hurtgenwald and then at the Remagen bridge. It surrendered on the 17th of April 1945 to the Americans.
Very interesting dogtag.
