The tag or 'Erkennungsmarke' shows overall normal signs of wear. It belonged to soldier who served in the 2.Kompanie Landesschützen Bataillon XI/XII. This unit was formed in August 1939 in Hildesheim. In April 1940 the bataillon became Landesschützen Bataillon 712. In August 1942 the bataillon was disbanned.
The Landesschützen units had as main task to guard prisoner of war camps, fighting partisans and were used as occupation force. Later during the war they often became Sicherungs units.
The 'A' on both parts of the tag stands for the soldier's bloodtype.
