Both documents show signs of wear, but the overall condition is good. Friedrich was promoted to Feldwebel in May 1944. The unit he served in was Grenadier Regiment 959. This unit was formed in late 1943 and fell under the command of the 363.Infanterie-Division. The regiment was stationed in Normandy in 1944 and saw fierce combat during the Allied invasion. It was destroyed in the Rouen area. The Regiment was rebuild again in Wildflecken (Germany) in September 1944 from parts or Grenadier Regiment 1158. It fell under the command of 363.Volks-Grenadier-Regiment and was moved to Arnhem in late September and participated in the combat against the Allies. In November it moved to Raum Erkelenz (Germany) and fought hard in Ort Hasenfeld. It saw then combat in the Ruhrkessel area and by Februari 1945 Grenadier Regiment had only 100 soldiers left. It surrendered in April 1945 to the Americans. The Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2.Klasse was awarded to Friedrich on 30th Januari 1945. It is signed by Generalleutnant August Dettling wearer of the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold.
