The document shows overall signs of wear. It was cut to fit a frame so the document is a bit smaller then normal. Folded in the middle. The Eisernes Kreuz 2.Klasse was awarded on the 6th of August 1941 to Gefreiten Josef Schmitz who served in the 9th Batterie Artillerie Regiment 818. This regiment was formed in May 1940. The III.Abteilung was equipped with the heavy 15-cm howitsers. It saw its first combat as part of the 12.Armee during the French campaign. With the start of the Ostfeldzug the III.Abteilung was part of the 11.Armee, 4.Armee and later that year with Panzergruppe 2. In July 1943 the abteilung was reformed in to Leichte Artillerie-Abteilung (RSO) II./818.
The document is signed by Generalfeldmarschall und Oberbefehlshader der 6.Arme Walter von Reichenau. Wearer of the Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes. Walter died in Januari 1942 of a heart attack.
